2003 Euro League - Munich Leg - Press Release

The following is the Muenchen Colmcilles official press release for the tournament:

2nd Annual München Colmcilles GAA Football Tournament

The Irish national sport comes to Germany for the second time on Saturday 9th August

On Saturday August 9th München Colmcilles host Round 5 of the 2003 Kerrygold European GAA Football League. This year the matches will take place in Munich at SV Gartenstadt Trudering that has been the official new home of the Cilles since the start of this year.

The exciting and very fast game of Gaelic Football can be described as a mixture of soccer and basketball. It is played by using both the feet, and the hand, on a 137m long and 82m wide playing area. Each team consists of fifteen players although in this tournament it will be 11 a side for the men and 7 a-side for the ladies.

As with last year, there will be men's and women's teams competing from all over Europe. The long established clubs such as Paris, Den Hague, and Luxembourg and of course Munich Colmcilles will be represented along with newly formed ones from Frankfurt, Würzburg, Amsterdam and Barcelona. The current standings in the European league have Paris on top with 59 points followed by Barcelona and Luxembourg. Muenchen Colmcilles best result to date has been a quarter final placing in Luxembourg but with a few extra weeks training under their belts, a full squad to choose from, and home advantage the Cilles must be in with a strong shout to repeat their fantastic win in last year's corresponding fixture.

Entrance to the games is free and the competition starts at 10 am with the final to be played at approximately 5pm. A special exhibition match of Irish Hurling will take place before the final at about 16:00 - for those not familiar with this ancient game, it is an excellent opportunity to see the fastest field sport in the world being played!!

In order to cater for the expected 300 people, including over 100 players, attending the tournament there will of course be drinks and food available on the day. An evening meal will take place in Munich's famous Augustiner Beerhall with superb Irish dancing and musical entertainment provided during the evening.
